Syracuse–a classical name for a modern city
Did you know? Syracuse almost wasn’t Syracuse. One of the city’s early planners hoped to name it Corinth, but another New York town was already using that name.
With Corinth off the table, the ancient town of Syracuse (on the island of Sicily) was picked instead. It was a well-chosen name.
Historically, both towns sat next to lakes where both fresh and salt water could be found, and both were near small villages named Salina, meaning “salt.”
